Burlington High School is proud to recognize two outstanding seniors, Thomas Schaal and Valerie Duarte, for their accomplishments in the highly competitive Daniels Scholarship Program. Both students were selected as finalists and advanced to the interview round—a significant achievement among thousands of applicants across four states. Thomas was ultimately selected as a 2025 Daniels Scholar.
The Daniels Scholarship Program, offered through the Daniels Fund, provides up to $100,000 in college funding to students from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to serving their communities.
Thomas Schaal, son of Craig Schaal and Candice Schaal, was chosen as a Daniels Scholar following the interview process. In addition to financial support, the program provides leadership development, professional growth, and a lifelong connection to a network of like-minded scholars. At BHS, Thomas is known for his academic excellence, leadership, and positive influence among peers. His integrity, dedication, and kindness make him a role model within the school community.
Valerie Duarte, daughter of Iris Duarte, was also recognized as a Daniels Scholarship finalist and participated in the competitive interview process. Valerie is an active member of the BHS Cheer team and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). She is widely respected by her classmates and teachers as a positive leader and role model who represents Burlington High School with pride and determination.
“We are incredibly proud of both Thomas and Valerie,” said BHS Principal Deidra Shutte. “Their achievements in the Daniels Scholarship Program reflect the strength of their character and commitment to excellence. Thomas’s selection as a Daniels Scholar and Valerie’s recognition as a finalist are both tremendous honors—not just for them, but for our entire school community.”
